DAYS/8 NIGHTS - WINDHOEK TO WINDHOEK
This
popular roundtrip combines a visit to the fascinating dune landscapes
of the famous Sossusvlei in the Southern Namib Desert, the rich coastal
diversity in and around Swakopmund, the attractions of the central
and northern regions of scenic Damaraland and the wildlife kingdom
of Etosha National Park.
Days
1 & 2: Sesriem / Sossusvlei
Guests experience the ever-changing landscapes, as the terrain becomes
more arid as we continue into the pro-Namib. Our journey takes us
to the famous Sossusvlei, a clay pan surrounded by some of the highest
sand dunes in the world. Explore the impressive conglomerate gorges
of the Sesriem Canyon, with its rock pools fed by the Tsauchab, the
same river that feeds Sossusvlei during the rainy season.
Accommodation: Sossusvlei Lodge - Dinner (day 1) - Breakfast &
Dinner (day 2)
Days
3 & 4: Swakopmund
Our destination today is the coastal town of Swakopmund. The route
passes through the Gaub and Kuiseb Canyons and what we call the gramadoelas
(Bad Lands). Visit the vast gravel plains of the Namib and Namibias
most celebrated plant, the Welwitschia Mirabilis, as well as the Moon
valley, offering an unusual view overlooking the landscape formed
by the valleys of the Swakop River. Day at leisure to explore the
town of Swakopmund. Swakopmund has a multitude of guided and adventure
activities on offer.

5: Damaraland
Departing Swakopmund we travel northwards past a number of shallow
ponds used for salt production and farming oysters, following the
coastline to Henties Bay. En-route a great variety of lichens will
be found, of which Namibia has some of the rarest and most interesting
species in the world and onwards to Cape Cross Seal Reserve. Head
inland across the flat, barren plain to the abandoned tin mine of
Uis and past the Brandberg Mountain (Namibias highest peak).
This is Damaraland with its rugged landscapes, sparse population and
great mountains.

6: Outjo
Twyfelfontein, meaning doubtful spring has been occupied
for thousands of years, with its spring attracting huge herds of game
making this an excellent base for early hunters. The slopes of the
area are strewn with boulders; dotted with thousands of paintings
and ancient engravings, a virtual open-air museum. Geological features
in the area include the Organ Pipes, angular columns of dolerite which
all form part of Namibias rich natural history and the Petrified
Forest. Proceed via Khorixas, which used to be the old administrative
capital of Windhoek and on to the town of Outjo.
Accommodation: Etosha Garten Hotel - Breakfast & Dinner
Day
7: Etosha Area
Enter the world famous Etosha National Park where you will enjoy a
full day game driving, as we head east. The game and birds found here
are typical of the savannah plains of Southern Africa, but include
several species endemic to the western side of the continent, adjacent
to the Namib desert. Herbivores such as zebra, elephant, giraffe,
eland, blue wildebeest, gemsbok, springbok, kudu and steenbok abound.
Among the rarer species, black rhino, and white rhino (recently reintroduced)
are sometimes seen. Black-faced Impala are restricted to Namibia and
southern Angola and the Damara dik-dik; the Parks smallest antelope
is also endemic. Hundreds of bird species have been recorded with
many migrants during the summer period.
Exit the National Park and proceed to a private Lodge situated on
the outside of the National Park.
Accommodation: Mokuti Lodge - Breakfast & Dinner

8: Otjiwarongo
Further wildlife encounters are likely before the tour departs from
the park. The history of Tsumeb is depicted in the Tsumeb museum,
where a comprehensive collection of rare minerals can be viewed. The

dumped into Lake Otjikoto by retreating German forces. Continue south
to the town of Otjiwarongo for overnight.
