Day
7
Early
morning departure to the town of Tsumeb which is dominated by the
central mine shaft, mining a rich ore pipe for copper, zinc, lead,
silver and a variety of unusual crystals for which Tsumeb is world
famous. This one pipe has produced 217 different minerals and gemstones,
of which 40 have been found nowhere else on earth. Whilst in the area,
you will visit Lake Otjikoto, which is Herero for 'deep hole'. In
1915, the retreating German force dumped weapons and ammunition into
the lake to prevent them from falling into the hands of the South
African Union Force. Since 1977, several of these weapons have been
discovered and can be viewed at the Tsumeb Museum. You will have the
opportunity to visit the Tsumeb Museum to view the armaments removed
from Otjikoto Lake. Thereafter, continuing south through the garden-town
of Otjiwarongo, originally a railway staging post between Tsumeb and
Swakopmund. Okahandja is the administrative centre for the Herero
People and where the Kavango woodcarvers ply their trade at a large
open-air craft market on the outskirts of the town. We return to Windhoek
during late afternoon where the tour ends with a transfer to your
hotel or the airport.
